Princess Power! A lesson plan for homeschooling parents. (feat. The Little Mermaid)



The focus of this campaign is to empower young girls to understand that their princess role models are fierce. Princesses don’t always need saving. As our world continues to grow, change, and evolve so should the narrative of our favorite fairytale princesses!


Objective: Draw comparisons between 3 separate mediums using the same story.

The Little Mermaid

Original Story by Hans Christian Andersen

In this fairy tale, a rebellious 16-year-old mermaid is fascinated with life on land. On one of her visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her controlling father, she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch to become human for three days. But when plans go awry for the star-crossed lovers, the king must make the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter.



Discussion Questions:


The Little Mermaid has a green tail and a purple top with red hair. If you were a mermaid what color would your tail, top, and hair be? Why?


The Little Mermaid calls her fork a “dingelhopper!” Find some other items and decide what she would call them. (Example Cell phone? (Shell Phone))


Do you think you would be able to not talk for three whole days and explain your wants and needs? Try it for one hour! If you can make it to one hour maybe go for TWO! Its important to be able to express your emotions physically as well as with speaking.


The Little Mermaid had a fish, crab, and pigeon friend that helped her during the movie. If you had animal friends what would they be and what kind of personality would they have?

Assignment

After watching the film, reading the original Andersen story, and taking a look at our 21st century Little Mermaid answer the questions and decorate a rock with mermaid scales to match your discussion 1 answer about how you would look if you were a mermaid!


IF you were a mermaid what would YOUR scales look like? Do some rock painting to discover your true mermaid form! Make sure to give yourself a mermaid name!
